HMS 'Sphinx' (1883)
Scale: 1:36. Model of an oscillating paddle engine used in HMS 'Sphinx' (1883) made entirely in metal partly painted. The engine is mounted on a red painted bed and the crank shaft is supported by two vertical metal plates, painted green. The two paddles are shown in position, painted red, with feathering blades. The steam feed is abrass pipe connecting to both cylinders joined by an inlet valve in the centre. On the aft side of the engine is a raisedsteel platform with a short companion way at either end and a eight spoke wheel in the centre. The two cylinders are symmetrical and are connected to the crank shaft above. The cylinders are placed within a frame with four turned pillar supports and a flat bed above. The model is mounted on a rectangular wooden baseboard, which is stained and varnished.
