Imperial German merchant ensign (1871-1919)

Imperial German merchant ensign, 1871-1919 pattern. The use of this design was revived briefly between 1933 and 1935. A label is sewn to the lower left hand corner which reads: 'FLAG OF GERMAN STEAMER "TELDE" Captured by H.M.S. ESSEX OFF TENERIFE MAY 3RD 1916. Presented by Admiral Sir Hugh Watson K.C.B., C.V.O., C.B.E.'

The ensign is made of wool bunting with a linen hoist and is machine sewn. A rope is attached to hoist the ensign. There are hand sewn repairs at the hoist. The design consists of three horizontal stripes black, white and red.

Original size: 1041 mm x 1270 mm
