In Eimeo [Moorea, Society Islands], Augt 27th 1849
Mounted in album with PAI4605-PAI4621, PAI4623-PAI4670.; No. 17 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849 - 52. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. An inland view on Eimeo [Moorea] with the dramatically jagged peak of Mount Mouaroa on the left, which can also be seen in the centre of Fanshawe's panorama of Moorea, PAI4621. This is part of the crater rim of the long-extinct volcano which formed the island. The white building and long-horn cattle grazing in the meadow indicate the Westernization of the Society group at this time. The French annexed Tahiti in 1842 and Moorea in 1843 and they are still part of the 'departement d'outre mer' of French Polynesia. This is one of a group of eleven Fanshawe drawings of the Society Islands, PAI4616 - PAI427, made while he commanded the 'Daphne' in the Pacific: three show Moorea (PAI4617, PAI4621-PAI6622).
Edward Gennys Fanshawe
