Italian naval ensign (before 1946)

A pre-1946 pattern Italian naval ensign, inscribed in ink: 'CAPTURED BY H.M. SUBMARINE UNSEEN 1942'. The ensign is made of wool bunting with a cotton hoist containing a cord and is machine sewn. The arms on the centre stripe are painted. Design: three green, white and red vertical stripes. On the centre stripe, the arms of Savoy - a blue-bordered red shield with a white cross overall, a crown above.

The donor's husband Eric William Watts served in HMS 'Unseen'. She was not commissioned until 1943 when she was attached to the 10th submarine flotilla, Malta. During 1943 she sunk six Italian merchant vessels and took part in operation Husky (landings in Sicily) in July that year.
