Lieut. Bligh and his Crew of the ship Bounty hospitably received by the Governor of Timor
This print shows Lieutenant Bligh and his shipmates landing at Coupang, Timor. The town's fort is visible in the background. In the foreground, Governor Van Este (left of centre) greets Bligh (right). The governor is surrounded by local Timorese people and European settlers. The appearances of Bligh and his companions seem to have been softened by the artist, as they appear relatively healthy and well-clothed in this image. The reality was somewhat different; in Bligh's 'An Account of the Mutiny on HMS Bounty', he stated: 'Our bodies were nothing but skin and bones, our limbs were full of sores, and we were clothed in rags . . . the people of Timor beheld us with a mixture of horror, surprise, and pity.' The print was done for Ashburton's 'A new and complete history of England... (1791-93) after a drawing by Charles Benazech (not Benezach, as inscribed) c.1767- 1794. It was reengraved in an octagonal format by his son Peter Paul Benazech in 1802, which can confuse the issue. [PvdM 1/18]
