Lieutenant William Rivers (1788-1856)

The uniform cap and sitter's apparent age suggests the date of this portrait of Rivers, who had lost his left leg at Trafalgar before he was twenty, was only made lieutenant in 1806, continued afloat to 1818 and from 1826 to his death was on the staff of Greenwich Hospital, latterly as Adjutant. For his memorial bust by Milnes see SCU0046.
