Loading the 'Corfu' at the King George V Dock
The P&O cargo/passenger liner 'Corfu' (1931, 14,280 GRT) was built by Alexander Stephen and Son Ltd. of Glasgow. In 1939 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty as an armed cruiser, serving in the Atlantic until 1944. After reconditioning she resumed her peace-time trading to the far east in February 1949. Withdrawn from service in April 1961, she was sold to Mitsui Bussan Kaishai Ltd of Japan for demolition. She is shown here in the King George V Dock being loaded with cargo for the Far East.
