Locket commemorating the Battle of the Nile, 1798. Obverse: A painted ivory plaque showing an oval shield - a trophy of arms and flags behind, under glass with a blue and gold scalloped border. Inscription (on the shield): 'NELSONS VICTORY'. Reverse: A silver gilt plaque inscribed: 'Presented to William Osborn by his Friends and admirers in commemoration of the Battle of the Nile, in which he took part on the 1st August, 1798.' Enclosed in a glazed gilt setting and fitted with a loop and blue-edged white ribbon. A William Osborne served as an Able Seaman in 'Minotaur' during the battle. He was born in Northern Buckinghamshire in late 1754, entering the navy as a landsman in HMS 'Dictator' in 1793 (research Barry Langridge).
