London Bridge, Cannon Street and Billingsgate
The first London Bridge was built of wood between AD 100 and 400 during the Roman occupation. Many bridges followed this one, and in 1823-32 Sir John Rennie built a new bridge formed of five stone arches.
The old Cannon Street extended from Dowgate Hill to Gracechurch Street. It was a popular residence for candlemakers, and the modern name is a corruption reference to this.
Billingsgate Market is famous for fish and bad language! For many centuries the area was one of the main wharves in London for the mooring of fishing vessels and landing their cargoes.
