Maitea [Mehetia], Augt 20th 1849 [Society Islands]
Mounted in album with PAI4605-PAI4615, PAI4617-PAI4670.; No.11. No. 11 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849-18522. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. The drawing shows Fanshawe's 'Daphne' under full sail off what he called ' the bold rock of Maiatea', in the Society Islands, which they passed at sunset on the evening of 20 August before reaching Papeete, Tahiti, on the morning of the 21st. Mehetia is a small uninhabited island about 110 km (68 miles) east of the southern point of Tahiti. It is volcanic with a well defined crater that still has an active hot spot. This is one of a group of eleven Fanshawe drawings of the Society Islands, PAI4616 - PAI426.
