Model of a warship, sixth rate; 20-24 guns; royal/ceremonial vessel
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 20 to 24-gun warship (circa 1708), built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. The model is decked and equipped. The absence of channels for the mizzen suggests the rig of a brigantine. It is mounted on a modern wooden display baseboard.
The model probably depicts a large sloop or 'cruiser' with a gun deck length of 92 feet by 24 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 250 burden. During the early 18th century, vessels of this type would be used for patrol and scouting duties and were especially useful in areas like the West Indies for operations against piracy. However, there is an equally strong argument that this model may represent a private yacht since there is a large amount of decoration around the bulwark screens, the quarter and stern galleries, not normally found on a minor warship of this date.
