Model of 'Benalder' (1949)
Object number SLR1627, dated circa 1949. Scale: 1:96. ‘Benalder’ (1949) was built by Charles Connell & Co., Glasgow, for Ben Line, and was fitted with deep tanks for carrying bulk vegetable oils. Two derricks serve three large cargo openings forward of the midship superstructure, and there is a third derrick and two hatches aft. The model is not in the first division of shipbuilders’ models, and it has degraded somewhat over time. The case, which is an original feature, was obviously made to a budget, perhaps a result of post-war austerity. Two plaques are each inscribed ‘SS Benalder Length between perp 450ft Breadth moulded 60ft Depth moulded 40ft Turbine machinery 6800 S.H.P. Owners Ben Line Steamers Limited Leith Builders Charles Connell and Co Ltd Glasgow’.
