Nagasaki, Japan

Nagasaki is the capital and the largest city of modern Nagasaki prefecture, in the extreme south-west of the Japanese island of Kyushu. It has a very long natural harbour orientated approximately north-north-east to south-south-west. This view appears to look across the town from the hills on the east side of the harbour, with a paved road and small burial plot in the foreground. There is a crowd of Western shipping at anchor in the bay.

Originally a fishing village, Nagasaki became a significant site of Portuguese missionary and trade activity in the 1540s, which formed the basis of its expanding importance into the 19th century: it became a free port in 1859. Through this period it was Japan's principal though not sole gateway to Western trade and under the Meiji restoration from 1868 it became a centre of heavy industry and a major Japanese naval base.
