Nelson's first letter with his left hand
When Nelson had his right arm amputated off Tenerife in 1797, it was far more traumatic than the loss of the sight of his right eye in 1794, the seriousness of which only gradually became apparent. Nelson was exhausted and depressed after the amputation and his physical pain can almost be felt in the writing. Despite his anxieties he was nursed back to health by Lady Nelson and was back with the fleet the following spring.
