Nelson's notes for battle plan of Trafalgar, verso
This sketch, hastily made on the back of a scrap of paper, appears to outline Nelson's plan for the Battle of Trafalgar, showing the enemy line cut in two places. There are accounts of Nelson outlining his tactics for the next engagement with the French to visitors to his house - Captain Richard Keats, captain of the 'Superb' during the chase of the French fleet, told of such a conversation taking place when he and Nelson walked in the grounds of Merton. This sketch could well have been drawn during one of these discussions to illustrate Nelson's revolutionary idea. The sketch is on the reverse of a series of notes made by Nelson relating to the promotion and patronage of junior officers, among a bundle of papers from Nelson to his brother, William. The notes have helped to provide a rough date for the sketch.
