'New Physical Observatory', Greenwich
Construction of the 'New Physical Observatory' began in 1891 and was completed in 1899 with the addition of a central dome. The 30-foot telescope dome was originally built to house the Lassell 2-foot reflecting telescope; this was later replaced by two much large refractors presented to the Royal Observatory in 1896 by Sir Henry Thompson.
