Non-regulation stock
Black stock reputed to have been worn by Nelson (1758-1805) at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. This stock is an example of non-regulation clothing as worn with uniform. It is made of black silk that has been set in 11 pleats which are sewn down at each end. At both ends are remnants of the black silk ribbon that would have been used to secure the stock around the neck. The stock is backed with white silk and interlined with a heavy glazed linen.
