Oshima, south coast of Japan
The view appears to be of wooded rocks off Oshima island, which lies well south of Tokyo in the wide outer gulf called the Sagami-nada Sea. A steamer, possibly Butt's ship 'Sylvia' though this is uncertain, lies in the distance at anchor between the rocky islets, with two small boats under sail to the right. PAJ2096, dated February 1870, shows the return of whaling boats to Oshima.
