Painted model of 'Great Eastern' (1858)
Scale: 1:44. A painted model of the 'Great Eastern' made entirely in wood with metal fittings. The hull has been carved from wood and painted pink below the waterline, and black, with a broad brick red stripe, above the waterline. A copper stripe runs the entire length of the hull approximately at deck level and two decks are indicated by two rows of painted portholes. Two iron stocked anchors are rigged on the port and starboard bows. There are a pair of paddles in paddles boxes just forward of amidships on port and starboard sides connected by an elevated walkway. The paddle boxes are painted black with white tops, and the paddles themselves are painted red. Forward of the paddle boxes on the port and starboard sides are six lifeboats, painted black with white covers, stowed on davits. Aft of the paddle boxes are 12 lifeboats, painted black with white covers, and stowed on davits. There are six masts, all of which have gaff booms, that are painted white with black tops and yellow mast buttons. The second and third masts have three yards and so are square rigged whereas the first and sixth masts are each made in one piece. There are five vertical funnels all painted white with black tops. The first and second funnels are oval in section, the third, fourth, and fifth are circular. Between the third mast and the third funnel is a black painted handle that projects from the roof of the deckhouse. Three sections of the deck can be removed for access to the steam engine and boiler. The deck is varnished wood which has been scored to resemble planking. There is a four bladed propeller painted in red.
