Polygonal telescope

This achromatic telescope has an eleven-sided mahogany barrel and a single brass draw tube. There is no mechanical stop for the draw tube. The other brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover (now bent). The objective lens cap is missing. The telescope once belonged to Captain John Shortland, who commanded the captured French frigate HMS 'Junon', which was re-taken by the French in 1809. Shortland died off Guadaloupe in 1810.
