Porcelain cup and saucer

Porcelain cup and saucer, decorated with bands of pink lustre and bat printed in black. The saucer and one side of the cup are printed with a scene depicting a ship sloop with an American pennant and ensign, the latter hoisted above the British ensign on the foremast. There is a paddle steamer and a mountainous shore in the background. The American eagle is perched on a cliff in the foreground holding an olive branch with stars behind, an anchor below. The scene either represents the American victory at Lake Champlain September 11, 1814, or Captain Lawrence's 'Hornet' after capturing 'HMS Peacock' 24 February 1813. The other side of the cup shows a more detailed version of the paddle steamer, wearing the American ensign with passengers on board. She is towing a tender, a hilly shore and a fort is shown in the background.
