Porcelain plate
A hand-painted porcelain plate. In the centre is a view of two ships engaging, one wearing the red ensign, the other on fire, inscribed below 'The Arethusa taking La Pomone St George's Day 1794'. The scene is surrounded by a black wave pattern and a gilt ground. The black rim is decorated with four blue medallions of tritons and sea beasts; between them, drawn in red on a gilt ground, are foul anchors within oak wreaths and bearded heads within laurel wreaths flanked by dolphins.
