Portable horizontal dial for latitude 49˚
The dial-plate is oval shaped. On its obverse side, the hour scale is depicted on a scroll. Hour-lines radiate from a central circle enclosing the scroll, which is inscribed 'Pour 49 De' [for 49 degrees]. The gnomon is simply shaped and engraved with birds, flowers and leaves. It is hinged, and folds flat when not in use. On the reverse side, there is a plain gnomon brace and the compass base is engraved with circular floral decoration. On the compass, the meridian line is marked, as is north, but no magnetic variation is indicated. It has a blued needle, with an open circle for north, surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. There is a convex glass cover over all. The dial-plate is supported by the compass and two turned silver legs.
