A half-length portrait of an unidentified naval officer, possibly a Mate as he is not wearing any epaulettes, seated on a chair draped with a patterned cloth. His right arm is resting on the arm of the chair. The sitter is depicted in uniform with his jacket buttoned and a soft peaked cap in his lap. The sitter wears a beard.
