Portrait of a French two-decker
A faint and rubbed (not on the back) offset of a ship viewed from slightly before the starboard beam. Her decks are crowded with people. This ship is similar to PAH3896 and PAH3898 in the general disposition of the ports and in the fleur-de-lis decoration on the fights and break of the quarterdeck. The figurehead, however, seems to be a lion holding a triangular shield, and on the upper deck there are two and not three ports between the chesstree and the entering ladder.
This drawing was probably made in around June-July 1673 when van de Velde visited the fleet refitting after the first battle of Schoonveld, 28 May 1673.
