Portrait of a Gentleman

The subject of this portrait, once thought to be Charles Blount, 1st Earl of Devonshire (1563-1606), is unidentified. According to the inscription, ‘AE[tatis]suae 29 1596’, the sitter was aged 29 when the portrait was painted in 1596, giving a birth date of around 1567. The sitter is richly dressed and wears an embroidered black doublet, trunk hose and a goffered linen ruff. His sword belt is of woven gold and silver thread. In the upper left hand corner is a ship under sail, with a hand emerging from a cloud waving her on and the inscription ‘Le Semblable’ [The Same]. The artist is also at present unidentified but the portrait is of high quality.
