Portrait of a naval officer
A three-quarter length portrait to right. The sitter wears a blue coat a red silk drape and a fair full bottomed wig his right hand rests on a terrestrial globe on the right. The surroundings show rock and foliage on the left with ships in a tempest on the right. This marine related background has been put in by a professional marine painter, possibly J. Van de Hagen. The terrestrial Globe may be by Morden, Berry and Lea. C 1685. It features 'Holanda Nova' with the prime meridian through the Azores and Cape Verde Islands. The tracks made by Drake and Cavendish are also marked. Since the globe has been turned to show the Far East it seems fairly certain that the subject is an East India Company captain. The painting which dates from about 1700 was once thought to be of Admiral Strangeways.
