Portrait of a small Dutch merchant ship
Shown in a light air from astern, and viewed from before the starboard beam with the mainsail loose in the brails, lateen mizzen half brailed up and topsail and topgallant loosed. The foremast and top are shown, the fore course and topsail being added subsequently. The anchor is shown a-cockbill. The ship has a plain fiddle-ended beak, an ensign on a staff, and one gun on the broadside forward and two aft. Two men are on deck. Doubtfully attributed to the Elder, with perhaps some pencil work by the Younger, and very approximately dated on style. It was later used for a picture now in the Wallace Collection (no. 246).
