Portrait of the 'Charles' (?), yacht
A portrait thought to be of the 'Charles', built 1662, also called 'Charlotte'. The yacht is viewed from well abaft the starboard beam. The line of the deck has been ticked in. There are two small wreathed ports right forward and one aft over the quarter-badge. On the tafferel there is a full-length figure of a man, probably in armour, with a baton in his hand. On the rail above, there is a single lantern with a large royal arms behind it. The figurehead may be a griffin. This is a rapid and (except on the stern) inaccurately drawn sketch in light pencil and wash and a little work with pen and grey ink, later strengthened with pen and brown ink. The latter pen-work is undoubtedly by the Younger, but faults in the head and waterline suggest that the drawing was started by the Elder. It could have been drawn if the yacht was used to take distinguished persons to Holland shortly before the Second Anglo-Dutch War, 1665-1667.
