Portrait of the 'Essen'

A port-quarter view portrait of the 'Essen', 50 guns, built ?1667, sunk after action 1676. On the tafferel are the arms of Essen on a crowned shield. On a scroll on the port side of the shield is 'ESSN', which like the arms is not in reverse. On the rail above is a full-length figure. Two shields are on the counter, on the port side are crossed anchors and on the starboard side a lion rampant for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

This tracing is from an accurate original either by the Elder or the Younger. It is approximately dated by the style as the dates of other drawings on the same paper make dating by watermark very uncertain.
