Portrait of the 'Hollandia'

Portrait of the 'Hollandia', 86 guns. She was built in 1665 and wrecked in 1683. She is viewed from the starboard quarter. On the tafferel, the arms of Holland on a crowned shield. This is supported by two seated figures holding up wreaths. Above is a female figure holding a sword and a shield bearing the arms of Amsterdam. Two further shields are on the counter, starboard side a lion rampant and port side, crossed anchors, for the Admiralty of Amsterdam. Offset, rubbed on the back, from a careful and accurate drawing, touched with a little wash on the stern decoration. It has been approximately dated based on the subject and watermark. A similar work by van de Velde the Younger, dated 1666, showing the ship starboard quarter view was illustrated in the Muller sale, Amsterdam, Marine, 25 April 1911, no. 199.
