Portrait of the 'Katharine'
The 'Katherine' shown from slightly before the starboard beam, with nine wreathed ports on the broadside, a large light abaft the aftermost port and a larger badge on the quarter. The four midship ports hold guns.
The drawing is an offset lightly rubbed on the back and sharpened with pencil. It is signed 'W.V.V.J.' and inscribed 'd ould katrijn' (the old 'Katherine') to distinguish it from a 'new' one also of 8-guns, built in 1674, of which PAH1864 is probably a portrait.
The old 'Katherine' was taken by the Dutch in August 1673 but returned in November 1674, as a present from the Prince of Orange to Alderman Backwell. In 1677 she was used for Princess Mary's marriage voyage to Holland but was usually assigned to the service of the Board of Ordnance.
