Portrait of the 'Zon'

Portrait of the 'Zon', 48 guns. She was built in 1640 and last mentioned in 1666.

She is viewed from the port quarter. On the tafferel, there is a large sixteen-pointed sun in splendour. On the rail above are the Arms of Amsterdam, supported by two lions. There are two shields on the counter, starboard side a lion rampant and port side, crossed anchors, representing the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

It is an offset, not rubbed on the back, rapidly worked up with pencil and wash. An offset in the Victoria and Albert Museum (4710) seems to be from a similar but finished original of a later date. It has been very approximately dated by style; another drawing on the same paper (PAH3883) may be dated as late as 1672.
