Province of Munster, Ireland
From volume eight, Maps of Ireland, of the Dartmouth collection of maps and plans, compiled for or by George Legge, Master General of the Ordnance. The Munster rebellion of the 1570s was crushed by the English. Following the Commisioners' tour of inspection in 1584, the land was parcelled out for plantation by English people to provide a garrison and to 'civilise' the Irish. Francis Jobson was plantation surveyor in Munster from 1586 onwards.
