Reading the chronograph at Royal Observatory, Greenwich
In 1852, George Airy installed a chronograph at the Observatory. It automatically recorded second impulses that had been generated by the Sidereal Standard Clock and marked these on a paper attached to a rotating drum. When the machine came into full operation in 1854, the astronomers were able to have a 'printed' record of the precise time of their observations.
