A small refractor telescope with a leather lens cap. This telescope, unlike the others in the Herschel collection, gives an upright image, which is to say it is designed for navigation rather than astronomy. It was almost certainly the property of Col. John Herschel, who was a Royal Engineer in India between 1856 and 1886.
