Regent's (or London) Canal, The City Basin
City Road Basin in Islington was the most important traffic centre on the Regent's Canal. It handled mainly incoming inland freight. Goods from around the country were then sent on from the basin to the Regent's Canal Dock on the Thames at Limehouse. The picture shows the canal with warehouses and dockyards along the banks. A barge on the water is steam powered, while another is pushed along by a man with a pole. The 'Ellen' barge moves down the canal loaded with produce, brought in to the docks from overseas and then transported elsewhere via the canal network.
