Reverse of Horary quadrant
This is a paper horary quadrant mounted on wood. This instrument would have been relatively cheap. Quadrants of this style were popular in Italy for several centuries. This one carries instructions on the reverse for the use of the instrument. Similar instruments are in the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford and the Whipple museum in Cambridge. The inscription along the bottom reads 'La notte e le nubi sono i nemici mici', 'the night and the clouds are my enemy', suggesting the need for the sun to use the instrument. Its plumb, bob and box are intact.
