River Tywi coracle, port

Scale: 1:8. Model of a River Tywi (Carmarthenshire, South Wales) coracle used for fishing. It represents a sawn ash lathe frame with wicker gunwale covered with a tarred calico 'skin' and is equipped with a paddle and a 'cnocer', a short club for stunning fish, which is held by a strap to the seat. The coracle is thought to have originated at least 2000 years ago. The canvas skin is waterproofed with tar and the long, narrow paddle provides control. These coracles fish in pairs using nets.
