Round headed rudder (1833)
Scale: 1:12. A working model of a round headed rudder connected to the stern post and complete with a section of the stern as proposed by Captain Limous/Lihou's circa 1833. The model is made largely from wood and has been stained and varnished. The rudder has been made in the traditional fashion and comprises of several pieces of wood complete with metals pintles made from brass with the lower section reinforced with twelve brass staples. Between the lower pair of pintles are two lead lined holes. At the head of the rudder which is round in section are four iron bands situated above and below the square aperture for receiving the tiller. The section of stern includes a small area of deck, three unglazed windows and a pair of circular holes which are lined with lead. the area around the gudgeons has the planking scribed on and shows the construction of the stern post, deadwood and false keel.
On the inboard face of the model is evidence that a small deck over the rudder head was fitted which is now missing. Just below on the flat surface of the model is a metal plaque inscribed ' Model of Cap.Lihous mode of fitting a rudder 1833 on one inch to the foot scale.'
