Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1748-67

This long-sleeved dress waistcoat of a lieutenant is an example of the first uniforms that were produced in 1748. The gold lace features the mousquetier pattern and the buttons are of a wood core, faced with brass and stamped with a quatrefoil rose motif. It is interesting to note that although Royal Naval uniform followed the fashion of the mid-18th century, the long sleeves would have been considered old fashioned by 1748.
