Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1805
Surgeons and physicians were not given a uniform until 1805. This is representative of one of the early patterns for which rank. The cocked hat belonged to surgeon Joshua Horwood (died 1850). This hat, made of a silk plush that resembled the beaver felt usually used for hats, would have been quite expensive. On the front is a loop of gold lace fastening to a small gilt brass button, which is an example of the warrant officer's pattern and features an anchor within an oval order. Horwood served as surgeon's mate in HMS 'Prince' at Trafalgar. He was promoted to surgeon 1807.
