Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1805

This pair of breeches are part of the uniform of surgeon Joshua Horwood (died 1850) who served as surgeon's mate in HMS 'Prince' at Trafalgar, and was promoted to surgeon in 1807. This uniform was passed down through the family and at some point was altered for children's dress. The breeches are typical of regulations uniform of the period, in that they are made of white facecloth and feature a button and flap front with a deep waistband lined with white linen. They still retain regulation buttons for the rank of surgeon. However, the shape has been altered, specifically the legs which have been taken in and shortened.
