'Royal Oak' (Br, 1862)
Scale: Unknown. A model in two parts depicting the starboard bow and stern of the Royal Oak class ironclad frigates made entirely in wood and painted and gilded in realistic colours and finishes. The model shows the design proposal for the bow and stern decoration. The hull is painted a uniform black and the fore and aft deck sections and inboard bulwarks are cream. The raised decorative elements are gilded with saxe blue details. The truncated bowsprit is depicted with a stylised fracture and is unpainted wood. The section faces are intentionally roughly finished and uneven. The bow decoration shows a lion rampant, flag and trophies, and decorative filligree work. The stern decoration shows one half of the Royal Coat-of-Arms, a unicorn, flag and trophies with filligree work. The bow shows the position of one gunport and there are two gunports at the stern. The model is displayed at either end of a polished rectangular mahogany baseboard with an integral rectangular backboard, painted pale blue/grey.
