S-bar hilted sword

S-bar hilted sword owned by Captain W. Holt active E1803-1838. The hilt consists of a gilt metal, five-bar guard (variation) with anchor cartouche, a flat cap pommel and a reeded ivory grip. Blade is a curved falchion. The black leather scabbard has two gilt brass lockets, and rings. William Holt entered the Navy in 1803 as a Volunteer. He was present at the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807 where he was in command of a rocket boat. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1810 and served with Captain Stewart (who bequeathed him this sword) on board the sloop Blossom in 1811. He was promoted Commander in 1824 and Captain in 1838.
