Sampan, starboard stern quarter
Contemporary model of a sampan (circa 1900) built at a scale of 1:12, of a type built at Aberdeen, a fishing village on the south side of Hong Kong Island (China, Asia). These vessels were used for inshore line fishing and transferring the catch from fishing junks to the shore. The model illustrates the frames and hull construction, with a central fish well divided into four compartments. These are filled with fresh seawater via holes in the hull planking to keep the fish alive ready to be sold at market. These boats are propelled with a steering oar against a thole pin over the stern.
