Scene in Plymouth sound in August 1815

After his surrender to Captain Maitland of the 'Bellerophon' off Rochefort in 1815, Napoleon was taken in her to Plymouth Sound where he remained on board, 26 July-4 August, while his future was decided. He appeared daily on the deck at 6.30 pm and was seen there by many who came out in small boats - including the artists J. J. Chalon and Charles Eastlake (see BHC2876). Chalon was born in Geneva but his family came to England in the wake of the French Revolution and he studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected Royal Academician in 1841. This picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1816.
