Seafront and beach, Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset
Burnham-on-Sea lies a few miles south of Weston-super-Mare in Bridgewater Bay. The seaside resort grew up in the early nineteenth century under the direction of a local clergyman, the Reverend David Davis. Davis wanted the town to become a fashionable watering place and spa. Although a well was sunk for the spa it was never developed as the water tasted and smelt unpleasant. The town is home to Britain's shortest pier, built between 1911 and 1914.
