Seal impression
Red wax seal impression. The seal depicts the whaling vessels 'Jane' and 'Beaufoy' together with icebergs and bears the inscription 'LAT 45 15' SOU LON 34 16'. The seal is contained in a turned wooden box. There is a label on the inside of the box lid, which is inscribed 'The seal of James Weddell R.N. called the Antarctic Pioneer. He having in 1823 penetrated to a higher Southern latitude than any preceeding navigator'. The label refers to James Weddell (1787-1834). Impressions like these were sold with seals so the purchaser could see the positive image the seal would produce.
