Seaman's sennit hat
This type of straw hat worn by naval seamen during the nineteenth century, finally disappeared in 1921. Extremely detailed uniform regulations were printed at the back of the Navy List at this time describing each item of rating's kit and the occasions on which it should be worn. Sennit hats were worn with blue uniform in summer, weather permitting but not at sea unless required as protection from the sun. The edge of the hat is bound with black braid, it has a chin stay to keep it on and a ribbon is attached with the name of the owner's ship 'H.M.S. NELSON'.Horace Slade
